No matter what career you are pursuing or planning to pursue, I’m sure you’re all familiar with career day. I attended my first one the other day at my school, LIM College. In seven weeks (and counting)…I will graduate with a degree in Fashion Merchandising, and my excitement levels are through the roof. However, as excited as I am, I am not looking forward to the fierce battle of finding a job. Luckily, my school provides me with opportunities and resources to network in one the world’s fashion capitals, New York City.
Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, it’s always beneficial to attend a career day…and more importantly be prepared. Knowing that I would be networking with companies in the fashion industry, a lot of thought went into my outfit of choice.
In any career day or job interview, first impressions are EVERYTHING. It’s how someone will remember you. So, when putting together my outfit, I had in my mind a quote by style icon, Rachel Zoe – “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Dressing professional is great, but it can be quite easy to blend in. Your own sense of style should never be lost, especially when dressing professionally.
I feel most professional in heels and a pencil skirt, but wanted to have a stand out factor. In this case, color and pattern were my stand out factors. If you feel most professional in pants or something else, that’s of course okay too! Just be sure to add something that makes you – you. Something that speaks your own style for you.
I think of it this way – in an interview you can get asked, “What makes you stand out from the rest?” Same goes for your outfit. Adding your own sense of style is what makes you unique and can be a way to be remembered.
Along with your outfit, next comes confidence, a positive attitude, a pen, several copies of an updated resume – and your ready to go!
